Hamper Update

Yesterday after school, Athlone School's Christmas Hamper was delivered to a very happy and thankful family. The kids were especially sweet with their 'thank-yous' and wishes for a 'Merry Christmas'.

It certainly helped to wash away some of the stress this time of year can bring and replaced it with the feelings of what is really important...people you care about; spending time together; and sharing our great good fortune with those who have not been so blessed.

A very big thank you to all you contributed to the hamper project. Your generosity will be well-appreciated by those three young children and their mom during this holiday season.

It never ceases to amaze me..how easily this community so willingly jumps aboard such a project and gives of themselves with such kindness and warmth.

Many, many thanks.

Warm Hands and Toasty Toes

Dear Families,

Athlone Students would like to spread their warmth and generousity by donating socks, undergarments, and mittens to Siloam Mission. We know that Winnipeg winters can be harsh. The Siloam Mission provides a safe shelter for community members that are less fortunate and do not have access to warm clothing, hot meals, and/or a safe place to sleep. Please help us, spread the warmth of the season by donating new mittens, undergarments, and socks to the Siloam Mission. Mittens, undergarments, and socks can be donated until December 20th. Thank you for your support.

Sincerely,
The Green Hearts Club

    Sincerely,

Risks with Technology & Social Media Session Cancelled

Athlone School is going to reschedule the planned session on the Risks with Technology & Social Media, that would have taken place this Thursday, November 3rd.

Unfortunately we had a very limited amount of interest at this time, so Thursday's session will not take place.

We are rescheduling for the spring and will try to partner with other schools in order to reach more members of our community.

          Our apologies.

          Plastic Bag RoundUp

Athlone School's annual Plastic Bag Round-Up has officially begun.

Last year 1.46 million plastic bags were saved from landfills and waterways through Take Pride Winnipeg's, Bag Up Manitoba program. There has also been a significant reduction in single use plastic bags since Bag Up Manitoba began.
Plastic bags can last from 200-500 years before they begin to degrade. Plastic bags that make their way to lakes, oceans, and rivers often endanger animal habitats or make the animals sick.
The Green Hearts Club is encouraging all of our staff and students, as well as their families to bring in plastic bags. Bags can be from cereal and crackers boxes, ziploc bags, shopping bags, bubble wrap, and bags from toilet paper and diaper packages. Take Pride Winnipeg respectfully asks that all bags be clean and dry as dirty bags clog the machines used, to turn the bags into useful products such as frisbees, birdhouses, garden boxes, and park benches.
Bags will be collected until Tuesday, November 1st. After the Bag Up Manitoba program has been completed, plastic bags can still be recycled at your local grocery store. Sobeys, Superstore, Safeway, and Wal-Mart have large containers at the front entrance of their stores, where bags of all shapes and sizes can be recycled. Thank-you for taking care of our earth.

          Sincerely,

          The Green Hearts Club

Green Hearts Club Appeal for Shamattawa

On September 23, 2016, a fire burned the only food store in Shamattawa, Manitoba.

Shamattawa First Nation has had to declare a state of emergency and is in need of assistance in bringing food to the community. They are especially hoping for donations to help young families that have infants and toddlers.  Perimeter Airlines has agreed to fly food and other donations, that have been collected by St.James-Assiniboia School Division, up to the people in Shamattawa.

As the people in Shamattawa are in dire need of assistance, Athlone School will be collecting diapers, baby formula, baby food, soap, toilet paper, and dried goods from Tuesday, October 4th until Friday, October 7th.  Thank-you in advance for your generous support.

                                                                                       Sincerely,

                                                                                       The Green Hearts Club

          Nutrition Night

The Athlone School Parent Council hosted a "Nutrition Night" on Tuesday, September 27th.

While parents gathered in the library to hear a presentation from a Community Nutrition Educator on the importance of healthy lunches, their children were in the school's gym learning about healthy food choices. and preparing a healthy snack.

With teacher volunteers from the Athlone staff, the students gathered into two groups. One group made couscous salad and the other group made rainbow fruit kebabs. When both groups were done, they all sat and down and shared and ate what they had made.

It was very informative and fun evening for everyone!

The Green Hearts Club will be having a toy sale on Wednesday, April 20, to raise money for the Manitoba Wilderness Committee and Humankind International.  They are asking families to donate gently used toys that have been outgrown or are no longer played with.  Books, complete puzzle sets, board games, cars, building sets, craft sets, are just a few examples of toys that can be donated.  Please do not send broken toys or toys/games with missing parts.  For hygienic reasons, they will not be accepting any stuffed animals/toys.  Toys can be brought to school from Tuesday, April 12th until Monday, April 18th.  The toys will then be sorted and put on display for the sale on April 20th.  All items will be priced for $1.00, $2.00 or $3.00.  The toys will be saved from landfills and students will be helping a local charity protect the environment and a global charity build a school for refugees.
